The development of human children precedes through stages which at about six the child has a sense of what its place is regarding their environment, particularly their family. The vulnerability to radicalization of individuals also depends upon the track of development going up through the rest of life especially puberty.

Socialization of the individual outside the family and into the larger community starts in earnest at puberty in what is today's high school and junior high school. If the individual has suffered extensive physical or emotional abuse before six, the rest of development is honed through the "high school" stage.

It is at this time that specific themes and symbols are associated with ANS inputs that freeze the belief structures of the young adult. Only about a third of those over 21 will make serious changes in the structure of perceptions (ideologies).

Certain beliefs known as True Beliefs provide the individual with the kind of inputs that were frustrated in the growing up process. The high school period tends to sharpen the distinction once the cut and thrust of sports and dating goes viral.

Those left out in the High School phase, often spend the rest of their lives trying to plug the gap. Ethnocentric outbursts by those in the High School Phase is the substance of what is burning now on the streets. Those most active as terrorists or other really bad people often come from severely damaged families and suffered extreme parental abuse. What psychology called crazy is often a normal reaction to a crazy world.

Hitler, Saddam and Stalin were abused by male parental figures. The leading terrorist of late often came from shattered families and neighborhoods, with the local brand of terrorism being a "natural" outlet for sense damaged in crazy childhoods.

IMHO, the root of all evil is not money, it is child abuse.

I love the TV Series, “the Vikings” and a fan of all manner of blades, spears, arrows, shields, helmets and horses in battle and duels of a more personal face to face era of closed order close combat. Whether by Hollywood’s need for close in action or by virtue of a lack of experience to recreate close order of battle, Hollywood Combat wouldn’t last long back then, for a lack of knowledge of “ergonomic combat” i.e. a fit between weapon and body versus the other guy’s fit. In other words, one could get killed wielding weaponry like in the flicks.

This is a proper shield wall from the Bayeux Tapestry of the Invasion of England in 1066. Shields were held in a “Norman Grip” to the left shoulder leaving both eyes to focus on the enemy. Overlapping shields were a wall over which battle was joined. Spears held in a stabbing grip to stab over the shields. The shield wall was developed by the Vikings and remained the European default until Pike and Shot made the shield obsolete by 1400.

Close combat, as in the combatants were at arm’s length or a few short steps away preceded the first rock and will continue until after the last. Close order combat came to an abrupt end in the First World War when it was no longer practical to be too close to your buddy or be swept away in the next full burst of machine gun fire, or exploding shell. Those that didn’t get far enough apart, not less than five yards, were seriously killed or wounded. The Hollywood/Re-enactor paradigm on wielding shields (with spear, axe and/or sword) is contrary to the Bayeux Tapestry shown above. Those mounted and dismounted on both sides, hold the shield with what looks like an arm wrestle grip to the shoulder. Those on the ground in the shield walls overlapped their shields and stab down over the wall of shields. This requires a left foot forward, with the right arm stabbing at an angle like chopping wood. And most importantly during the final delivery of the blow, is to have the eyes on the “inside” (between the hands), and not with both hands on one side or the other. With two handed weapons, the eyes must look directly over the grip and at the target as in “keep your eye on the ball”.

Close Order battle requires strong cohesion as adhesion between those in front, flank and rear. If that adhesion weakens, the enemy will attack to broaden the breach and pile on. Once this happens, any one person who panics often triggers a startle response in which the feet move first and the rest of the formation scatters the formation like popcorn in a high wind. The Startle Response (Panic) can be replicated in training, as one of my Commanders did when I was a squad leader. The company was deployed on the military crest of a low hill, when it was attacked by the First Sergeant yelling like fury. One soldier leaped to his feet, tossed his rifle and fled, and the one next to him followed suit. The company scattered like popcorn in a high wind. The gimmick: the one who yelled was in on it, the guy next was told to follow suit, and a hundred others fled. After recovery, the CO taught us what panic feels like, what to do and what not to do. I have repeated this drill over the next twenty five years for the same reasons, and the same effect.

Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg was like a Tipping Point where deadly fires from Union rifle and gunfire progressively reduced Confederate offensive power to the Tipping Point led to a withdrawal under fire. The Startle Response can be attributed to Stonewall Jackson’s flank attack (in a mile across wall of infantry) at the Battle of Chancellorsville (May 2, 1863) on the far right flank of Hooker’s Army after marching across the “nose” of the Union penetration south of the Rappahannock River. The Biology of Panic follows two paths in the brain to the switchboard of the Amygdala, Smell and Audio-Visual, which produces chemical changes to make things happen or not. Training can reroute the stimulus to learned responses without the intervening inconvenience of thinking about it. Using a multi-sensory battle simulation works best when Smell (olfactory) is added to Audio-Visual. Smell is the oldest of senses and is routed through the Thalamus to activate the Limbic System while Audio-Visual is routed through the Hypothalamus which goes to the Cortex both by way of the Amygdala. Smell (Stink) produces action without reflection. So, in order for training to Stick, It Must Stink, however slight.

The ever so popular melee on screen increases the “Murphy Factor” and the results become unpredictable. The sight of one person moving away from the battlefield can trigger the panic by virtue of tipping or startle which are the handmaidens of Murphy’s Law. A major percentage of the time spent by opposing forces was in shouting matches and combats between champions. Such was the case at the battle of Yarmouk between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Rashidun Caliphate in 15-20 August 636 southeast of the Sea of Galilei. The battle is considered on the short list of decisive battles as it ended Roman (Christian) dominance of the Levant until the Crusades. There were several days of taunting and champion combat until the cohesion of the Roman formation left too many gaps and not enough maneuver room.

Defense against Murphy usually is encoded into the local customs of combat which often were highly specialized as archers (Welsh Longbow), crossbow (Genoa), light cavalry (Poland and the Balkans), pike (Swiss), two handed axe (Varangian-Swedes) and the Shield Wall (from the Vikings to the Crusaders). In today’s parlance we use the terms doctrine, SOP, principles, procedures, and the current US Army TTP (tactics. Techniques, and procedures). In Medieval times, change came slower as local customs, values, beliefs, behaviors and norms were embedded in the body of the local society. What produced superb warriors in one century produced targets in another. The knowledge was passed down in oral and in child raising and was impervious to change until literacy interfered. Then the pace of change can occur in hours where centuries were required in the past. A common understanding (similar to doctrine, and TTP) existed in medieval combined arms and joint forces, logistics and deployment for combat is evident in medieval combat, particularly in the better trained units. Yet these are not written down anywhere, nor do many remember what was done, as the latest thing blows the old away. That these existed is evidenced by the sophistication of the march under Richard the Lion Hearted from Acre to Jaffa including the victory at Arsuf on September 7, 1191 AD.

Ordinarily Shield Walls did not move, yet in the march from Acre to Arsuf, the shield walls shuffled along absorbing swarms of the rapid firing low velocity arrows of Saracen and Nubian forces under Saladin. This protected the horses of the heavy cavalry from arrows, which now protruded from the infantry’s protective armor and padding. When the Knights of the Hospital attacked the tormenting Ayyubid archers, Richard called for the Cavalry to charge, but to do so, had to do what is called today is a “passage” of lines and is considered the most difficult maneuver in modern times, especially when there is a passage from the enemy side.

Likewise banners, flags, pennons, and Guidons are the default visual means of controlling forces afoot, afloat, or a riding. The soul that carried the banner of a band of brothers did so without a weapon in hand, and for whom dropping the flag was a major disgrace. It still is, even though following the flag in current battles would draw fire.

The Jedi Mind trick/BS Decoder, I call F4F, under the provisions of the KISS principle, by keeping it Simple. All life forms have a strategy for survival of which there are three components: Prime Directive, F4F, and Drama which can be approached from multiple ways, The Prime Directions is "F”, as in F'ing, the F-word as in survival of the species by having dinner or a date, and avoiding being dinner. Once feeds, breeds, or dies off. The process of protecting and nurturing the multiplication tables in the face of drama is culture, or also called a strategy for survival of the species, or any aggregate thereof.

Drama enters when the choice is being dinner or getting one ... that is an existential threat, Having a date is when the boys fight over the girls, and the girls compete to be fought over. This is true for dandelions as much as mountain lions. One is life or death, the other is getting laid or not. Success in both means survival of the aggregate be it family, tribe, nation, herd, pod, or flight. It is as true for dandelions as for mountain lions.

The protection and nurturing an aggregate in it’s most popular form is playing the role of victim, prosecutor, and rescuer any of which calls for a danger or a villain.

In Whale, Lion, Dolphin or Elk society, the mechanism for protecting the young is vested in the formation of the women and children who move as a unit, while the guys do guy thing until mating season. Sometimes the mating between a male and at least one female is short often with the guys skipping the birthing. The human family is the only one where an extended visit by the male in the family occurs, although the tradition of guys doing guys things remains in its vestigial form.

In the face of an existential threat (being dinner, or having one) triggers the full aggressive potential of the culture. Women in defense of their children are not anyless fierce than a rutting male. Villains exhibit a corruption of the natural force of protecting and nurturing the helpless (victim). The emotions associated with real existential threats or the loss of access to the other sex, are in themselves physically addictive and people play psychological :"games" or "play" to get high or get ready for a real fight.

The switching roles between victim, rescuer and prosecutor in games played with other people, inanimate objects or entirely mental create a "payoff" which can be collected as if stamps of the kind one used to get at the grocery store.

The attributes of villainy are the flip side of the heroic triangle, different in adverb and adjective. There may be no fundamental objective difference between hero and villain, except that being a potential lunch colors the hungry as villainous.

Mating rights in a species, tribe, nation, or village are related to the social statues of the players as affected or imposed on the physical world. This is F4F:

In the case of the Birther/Truther braggadocio one gains face and fame, and maybe fortune by being able to predict one’s fate. The Truther paints the government as a Villain who lies (manipulative), and is prepared to batter (bastard) and the Truther knows because the Villain is mad (brat). The Birther also paints the government as mean, mad, and manipulative and acts as rescuer cum prosecutor.

Whether facing one or running one, it is important to understand the differences.

Plots imply considerable formal planning covering a large number of details on the part of at least one of the participants, with decisions reached collectively or through manipulation. Most successful plots depend upon a supreme manipulator who can keep the inner secrets to him/herself like a spider in the middle of a web. Because of the vast number of details, long term plots are usually limited to the reign of the supreme plotter and the nature of the plot is the retention of his/her control. Such was the case of Adolph Hitler and Joe Stalin.

Conspiracies, in the Common Law, do not necessarily require detailed central direction, only common action to an identifiable end. Those involved in a lynch mob, or those involved after the fact can be convicted of conspiracy even if no central plan or agreement has been made so long as the objective is illegal. Theoretically, rush hour traffic is a conspiracy, particularly here in Houston with thousands of illegal speeders invading the central city each day and nationally resulting in annual casualties in excess of the Vietnam War.

There is no word for good conspiracies, but there are numerous examples of collective action for positive ends without central direction. These are often called customs. Christmas shopping and decoration are customs with predictable results. Teenage social prancing within any given community or high school can achieve high degrees of complexity. In the days of “American Graffiti”, “dragging the main” was a ritualized method of mating behavior no less relevant than birds, bees, and bucks. There is a “way” of doing things. Many corporations have an instinctive “way” of doing things that defy central direction developed without central direction.

Giving something back to the community!

Infantry companies and the military in general have highly ritualized methods of making decisions and the military sends its members to formal residential training lasting as much as ten percent of a career soldier’s time to learn it. Houston traffic patterns vary little month to month, but the situation that an infantry unit faces can change radically in seconds which requires rapid and effective delivery of the decision making process even when the key decider has been killed. This is the military “way”, a decision making process independent of objective or motive.

The entertainment industry and the oil exploration business have something in common, a highly developed and intricate business process. The oil exploration industry is a vast conglomerate of independent, sometimes mom and pop, specialized companies like mud companies, mouse hole companies, hot wax companies, hot shot companies and fishing companies each dedicated to one particular slice of the drilling process. A mouse hole company drills the three holes the drilling stems are place when the bit is replaced.

Like drilling, the movie industry is a vast aggregate of small companies and talented individuals who have a specific role in a highly defined work process. Movie production is so defined that there is a specified number of checks that must be written “above and below the line”. Just look at the credits of a movie. That’s advertising and the credit counts in the trade. It’s a long list.

Research labs and intelligence agencies are full of giant egos, manipulative back stabbers, and incredible talent. Fortunately there are some standards of what constitutes professionalism, but mavericks abound. Leading such a mob is like herding cats. Put a plate of food in the room and get out of the way. Or find a chief cat the other cats admire and get out of the way.

While long term plots as the legendary Protocols of Zion, or International Communist Conspiracy, or Corporate-Media Capitalist conspiracy or Islamic terror are not the products of central direction but of custom, collective “ways” of direction which may include a formalized decision making process. There is, most importantly, no snake whose head removal will affect anything anymore than arresting the lead speeder at rush hour, other than a temporary slow down of gawkers. The Zionist "conspiracy" in effect is the custom of hard work and study which in many less energetic communities is seen as a personal threat. The Final Solution had little effect on a culture used to pograms, purges, and persecution.

The current Islamic Jihadi is a compendium of “ways” of doing business including the tribal connectivity of relatives, and the flotsam and jetsam of the various Communist efforts to overthrow capitalism. The Communist system of cells, methods of warfare, infiltration, propaganda, subversion, and deception developed in the Russian, Chinese, and Vietnamese experiences were passed on formally in the Lumumba Institute in Moscow, in Ghaddafi’s desert training camps, teach-ins at Berkeley, and in the mountain vastness of Afghanistan and mingled with various revolutionary dogma to add a flavor of righteousness to bloody business.

Ironically, while the terrorists trained in this network espouse ideological purity, the camps were quite ecumenical regarding ideology. Irish Catholic members of IRA trained peacefully with Maoist Shining Path, and Islamic members of the Brotherhood. Even Al Qaeda is composed of often opposing views of Islam. And this is the important point, psychology not ideology counts.

This is the central theme of Eric Hoffer’s book “The True Believer” a title which has become a noun. Hoffer was a University of California Professor of Philosophy who never went to school and whose day job was as a Longshoreman on the San Francisco docks. He clearly pointed out that True Believers change sides, as he noted regarding former SS soldiers recruited in the East German Volkspolizei. It is doubly ironic is that Joseph Goebbels greatest achievement in the early Nazi days was to recruit the Communist Red Front into the SA “Brown Shirts”.

The psychology of the True Believer is not ideology or purpose, but rage. A rage most likely derived from a dysfunctional and abusive early family life. Hitler was beaten to an inch of his life by his half Jewish father. Hitler’s revenge was to turn his father’s gravesite into an artillery impact area and by extension the Final Solution. Stalin and Saddam likewise fared poorly from the immediate family male members and were coddled by an over protective mother. Their rage, like the rage expressed by Mohammed Atta drives the War of Terror which runs on rails of Red rails of Ways of doing business.
Each of these plots is described by their critics as bound by central direction, often represented by an identifiable creed or game plan known to all as their Conspiracy Theory. Such include the Elders and Protocols of Zion, Das Kapital, the Communist Manifesto, the Bilderbergs, etc. It helps if these various conspiracies are seen as omniscient, omnipresent, devious, and unrelenting.

The problem with conspiracy theories is that no one is that smart. Anyone who has organized a company picnic, a festival, or family reunion knows that even what takes a couple of hours needs weeks of preparation in which everyone is at everyone else’s throat.

The military decision making process, done properly, is an organized method of covering the bases, done under pressure, and against a lot of uncertainty, largely caused by an uncertain knowledge of what the enemy is up to who is also under the same pressures. As an intelligence officer for over twenty years, I expected to predict what the enemy was going to do, while my counterparts on the other side were trying to figure out what my boss was going to do after I figured out what he was going to. I’m not that smart.

The problem with conspiracy theories is that the conspirators are too busy conspiring against each other in order to determine who is in charge of what. And the focus of interest is not what, but who. The histories of bona fide conspiracies such as Hitler’s Chancellery or Stalin’s Kremlin are monuments of in-fighting fostered deliberately by El Supremo to maintain control. Hitler’s principle of survival of the fittest meant that he gave the same job to different subordinates or gave different orders to people with identical responsibilities, the survivor was the most fit. In fact, even democratic or corporate leaders stay in power by divide and control by acting as the instigator of strife than the decider of them. FDR was famous for this. Abraham Lincoln couldn’t reveal his long term plans without risking them and instituted what he wanted as time and circumstance allowed.

NAZI Poster justifying the euthanasia of the handicapped on the basis of cost saving

The net effect is in real conspiracies chaos is the normative state, often with comic-tragic effects such as the late ludicrous Coalition Provision Authority in the Emerald City of the Green Zone. Or the workers paradises in North Korea and Cuba.

It is equally tragic to go to war against a true conspiracy with the notion that said conspiracy is in fact a conspiracy and not a bunch of clowns clawing at each other for control of increasingly rare resources. By treating a conspiracy as cohesive, we create cohesion. Strategic bombing assumed that a rational leader operating in the best interests of his conspiracy would cut a deal when the means of waging war were threatened with extinction. The central issue of the dictator is to remain dictator even of a pile of rubble.
